The Negrenses and My Heavenly Home Called...Himaya.

After quite some time (which seemed like forever), I was able to pay a long-awaited 3-day visit to my hometown Himaya in Negros Occidental. This is actually my first time to go home with a dSLR. I was just using my handy point-and-shoot the last time, yet I still somehow managed to immortalize how I felt during my visit then, despite the lack of fancy gadgets. It's more of a mission for me now to be back again, already equipped with stuff I'll need to take better photos. I got up early each morning, trying to make the most out of the little time I have. I have to make sure I bag as much memories of my hometown as I can.

I missed everything about this little town, and it stung, but not as much as it embraced me. Bittersweet, it will always be, as I re-live the carefree (and careless) days of my childhood... Each corner, each crossroad, each tree, were as sad, as happy, as it were familiar. I wanted to re-trace every single step I made on every single street. As the cliche goes, home is where your heart is. That explains why this place will always be dear and appealing to me. I just wished I had more time then.

Of course, more essentially than anything else, I went to home for my mom. I wanted to personally tell her my stories about everything--all that I've been through, all I've acquired and achieved, all my kalokohan since I went back to Manila.. Although I'm certain she knew all of those already. I hope I still made her proud, and I hope she knows that whatever I am and whatever I will become, I forever owe and dedicate to her.

I also had this fortunate chance to shoot the streets of Bacolod with Sir Tonet Abong from the Camera Club of Negros. CCN are people I have always admired and looked up to even when I was still a kid, so I consider myself honored to shoot with one of them.

Here is my attempt to perpetuate the nostalgia of my most recent visit to this one place that, regardless of geographic proximity, will always be near to me. The streets and emotions of Negros, and my heavenly home Himaya.

Portraits of children we came across during a trek to Mt. Gulugod in Mabini, Batangas on the 14th of July 2007.  Somehow while I was there, made me wonder how these kids are going to keep up with other kids who live in the city, playing video games, hanging out in the malls, wearing good stuff, eating good stuff... etc. so I wondered, how are they going to keep up...

The Children of Sampaloc
Sampaloc Bible Church
Sampaloc, Manila
August 11, 2007

A SHORT BACKGROUNDER on SBC's Street Children Ministry by Pastor Dave.

You may walk around that Lerma street and look for a church building and have difficulty finding the "church."

Sampaloc Bible Church (SBC) is not a cathedral if you're looking for one.
It's more of an urban-based ministry center that looks like more of an old run-down pasilyo. Actually, we are renting the place and we used to run a canteen and a ladies' dormitory. Now we converted all those spaces to minister to children and even the poor mothers. So don't be surprised... this is not your regular Sunday church.

In the late 80's we started the street children ministry. Before it was just a feeding program and a drop-in center. Later on as funds were available, the church decided to minister to these kids wholistically- housing them, feeding them, sending them to school and providing spiritual guidance to them. We established a foundation (Saganang Buhay kay Cristo Foundation) which was accredited by DSWD.

We have kids in the shelter who have actually reached college levels and we have had a couple of graduates and some actually became full-time Christian workers! What a privilege to be involved in the lives of these kids!

These past couple of years have been tough. The support coming from international sources have ended and the church had to assume support for the ministry almost 100%. Unfortunately we had to gradually reduce the number of our children from over 30 to now 15.

We have organized these EBs for a number of reasons:

* introduce you to our ministry
* have fellowship with the kids
* discover people who are willing to support the kids
* fuel our passion both in photography and in our social concerns

Thank you Pastor Dave for that blessed opportunity. Thank you fellow DPPers (Digital Photographer Philippines)! Aren't we glad that we were able to make these kids happy? Most of these kids didn't get anything 'special' from us. But by just being there, taking their photos, having them look at their smiling faces in our cameras LCDs, meant 'something' for them. They were happy. We made them happy. So...true enough, great joys are brought about by simple things...

I don't just take photographs of people, I make sure I capture their story, their emotions, and even their lives. Each person has a story to tell but have no means or not even have a simple chance to share them to the world, and its my job to help them deliver their messages. Heartfelt photographs deliver messages twice as fast as FEDEX... these are some of the most unforgetable people I met, knew, and touched my heart, people who somehow shared their life stories, their emotions... people I met in this photographic journey.
